Over the past six months, Wasaline has cooperated with Finnish fire safety companies Firesea Equipment Oy and Rescue Team Scandinavia to find new solutions for fighting vehicle fires at sea. Together with other shipping companies, Wasaline has participated in a joint project to develop an innovative extinguishing pool. Now Wasaline is the first shipping company to order the product on board its Aurora Botnia ferry.
In the event of a battery fire, the EVFS pool can be quickly set up around the vehicle. The fire is then brought under control by immersing the batteries, usually placed under the floor of the car, in a coolant. In field trials, the pool has proven effective and easy to maneuver in tight spaces on the car deck.
Wasaline has also equipped Aurora Botnia with AVD (Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion) extinguishers which are currently the most effective method on the market for containing lithium-ion battery fires. The AVD agent cools and encapsulates the hot battery.
“Safety at sea is our top priority. Wasaline is always willing to participate in innovative projects in safety, technology or sustainability. By supplying Aurora Botnia with Firesea Equipment Oy and AVD fire extinguisher, we are once again strengthening our preparation,” says Peter Ståhlberg, MD of Wasaline.
“At this time, I would like to express my gratitude to our partners in shipping companies, rescue services, industry experts and contractors. Aurora Botnia crew took this opportunity to improve maritime safety with very proud,” concludes Ståhlberg.
