The French shipbuilder OCEA today launched the first of twenty “OCEA FPB 98 MKI” patrol boats for the Ukrainian national border guard service at its Sables d’Olonne shipyard.

In november 2019, an intergovernmental agreement between France and Ukraine was signed to support the strengthening of maritime safety and security in Ukraine. OCEA won the international consultation launched by the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

The acquisition contract covers 20 OCEA FPB 98 MKI type 32 m patrol vessels to ensure the country’s sovereignty in the Sea of ​​Azov and the Black Sea.

The launching ceremony of the BG201, the first OCEA FPB 98 MKI in a fleet of around twenty units, took place this Thursday, December 9, 2021 on the OCEA site in Sables d’Olonne. His Excellency, Mr. Vadym OMELCHENKO, Ambassador of Ukraine in France, and representative of the French Government were present at the ceremony.

Five of the twenty FPB 98 MKI ships ordered will be built by Nibulon Shipyard, in Ukraine in Mykolaiv. The fleet is accompanied by a set of services including crew training, vessel maintenance and technical assistance to the customer during the warranty phase. The first ship is due to arrive from France to Odessa in Ukraine next spring. The OCEA FPB 98 MKI are expected to be deployed in the Black Sea and the Sea of ​​Azov.

The OCEA FPB MKI are vessels designed by OCEA for Maritime Safety missions of one to two weeks within the Exclusive Economic Zone. Designed to function as a true naval base at sea, these autonomous vessels display key design technologies. Thanks to a combination of high speed and endurance, the high level of equipment and comfort allows the surveillance of a large operational area and the coordination of operations such as:

  • Territorial and offshore surveillance operations
  • Smuggling and control of illegal immigration
  • Control of ships at sea
  • Search and rescue
  • Protection of natural resources and the blue economy
  • Sovereignty

OCEA’s patrol vessel FPB 98, 32 meters long, has a crew of 13 sailors and a maximum speed of 30 knots. The FPB 98 is currently in service with the Suriname Coast Guard and the Algerian, Benin and Nigerian navies.

Each vessel will be equipped with a modern optoelectronic surveillance system and an RHIB for border guard reconnaissance groups.
