GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Dutch company has been awarded a $1.3 million contract to dredge the port of St. Joseph.

The US Army Corps of Engineers – Detroit District said in October that a ship had bottomed near the north side of the harbor entrance. The ship was not damaged.

“(A) survey indicated a significant shoal up to 10 feet on the north side of the outer shipping channel through the center of the channel”, Elizabeth Wilkinson, Grand Haven
resident engineer, said in a press release. “The channel is restricted but has not been closed to boating traffic.”

The Corps of Engineers said the severe windstorm on October 17 was the likely cause of the rapid rise in the shoals.

On November 17, King Co. was awarded the contract. The Corps of Engineers said it would dredge 14,200 cubic yards and should be finished by the end of the year. An additional 90,500 cubic yards will be dredged in the spring.

Material will be placed along the shoreline from 2,500 feet south of the south jetty to 5,500 feet south of the south jetty. It will be placed between the ordinary high water mark and the most onshore four-foot depth contour, the Corps of Engineers said.
